If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you’ve always gotten. - Jessie Potter (Not Albert Einstein, or Henry Ford)
Humans love order. We love to straighten things out. Where nature creates wiggly paths, we build straight roads. Clean cuts. Straight lines. Orderly people. Square houses. Routines. Like receiving this newsletter on Mondays.
There is good reason to build routines, but if you want to get the full experience - you need to also embrace the polar opposite - chaos and disorder. Like receiving this newsletter on a Tuesday.
⚡ The Action
Change up three life routines: your looks, your greeting, and your teeth brushing.
🤔 The Why
Your life has two (yes, yes, I am oversimplifying, but you did ask this to be short) modes of operation. One - the conscious mode. This is when you pay full attention to every detail and make self-aware decisions. Two - the unconscious mode. This is when your brain decides everything for you. Like when you completely space out during your commute.
Routines make us do way too much of the latter, and not enough of the former. This results in decreased levels of emotions, boredom (as nothing is new within a routine), anxiety for change, inattention to important signs.
In essence, we become numb robotic versions of ourselves. Too much order kills the jazz within our souls.
🧐 The How - Full Version
Let’s shake things up a bit, and bring the music back. Changing routines is easy, and one small change can easily help you find yourself again. For this week, let’s do three and start early in the morning:
When you brush your teeth, do it with your OTHER hand. Some say this can make you smarter, others claim it helps your teeth. I say, it awakens you to a world full of possibilities.
Each morning, dress in a way how you normally would not. Play around with color, mismatched styles, hair.
Change how you greet people and do a unique greeting for each person you talk to. No more “Hi, how was your weekend?”. Be creative.
🐨 Lazy Mode
Is the same as the full mode, but you get to pick just one item from the list. If you want to be a rebellious lazy koala, do two.
💖 Personal Application
Big improvements, very often start from minuscule changes. The fact that you greet someone uniquely might lead to a deeper and more fulfilling conversation. This might improve your mood, which in turn could spice up your personal relationship at home. The energy from an improved relationship could help you break a bad habit or two, which can make you more productive, which in the long-term could lead to success.
Start small, and trust the tiny changes in your life.
💸 Professional Application
All great businesses experiment, change and adapt. They are “agile”. Those who aren’t- die out. In other words - businesses that stick to old routines are the whales that will be outcompeted from the market.
Changing routines in your business can help you create a much more innovative and productive environment.
